The History of Seventh-day Adventist
The Seventh-day Adventist Church grew out of the Protestant reformation. This was a time when an uprising of people sought to return the church to its Biblical foundation and refocus on truths about God and His dream of community. By the 1800's many churches had been caught in formalism and for many the church was an institution rather than a life-transforming community. A re-emphasis on the promise of Jesus' second coming (advent) awakened in many a deeper yearning for spiritual things and for God to work in and through them.
Most of the thousands who had joined the movement left in disillusionment. However a few were driven to a deeper study of the Bible. They discovered truths, including those about what Jesus does in heaven for us now, which transformed this group into a community with renewed hope, a deeper focus on the things of God and a yearning for God to work through this group to show His love to the world. From this small
group who refused to give up after the great disappointment arose several leaders who built the foundation of what would become the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Standing out among these leaders were a young couple, James and Ellen White, and a retired sea captain named Joseph Bates.
In 1860, at Battle Creek Michigan, the loosely knit congregations of Adventists chose the name Seventh-day Adventist
and in 1863 formally organized a church body with a membership of 3,500. In just a century and a half the Seventh-day Adventist Church has grown from a handful of individuals to a world-wide community of over twelve million members and millions of others who regard the Adventist Church their spiritual home. This congregation here in Woodbridge, Virginia is one of over one hundred thousand world-wide and the Adventist Church is one of the fastest growing religious movements on the planet. However the goal is not primarily about numbers but about a community of people allowing God to use them. The congregation in Woodbridge was formed in 1977 when a small group of believers had a vision to share the gospel in the Prince William County, Virginia area. (Built the church)
The congregation has since outgrown the Minnieville Road building where we currently meet and has begun the process to find or build a new facility that will meet the needs of the people who attend The Woodbridge Church on a regular basis. Today you will find all sorts of ministries based at our church. We endeavor to be a church that is active in reaching and saving the lost, is dedicated to worship, is serious about involving people in using their gifts and talents and emphasizes spiritual growth. Above all, we seek to be a community that allows God to work through us to transform lives and have more people looking forward to Jesus' soon return.
