Brief History of the Woodbridge Seventh-day Adventist Church

The Woodbridge Seventh-day Adventist Church had its official beginning the first Sabbath in 1970 with a branch Sabbath School. Because of the vision of Agnes Cato, she contacted the surrounding Adventist churches to inquire if there were members living in the Woodbridge area. It was discovered that several Adventists did live in the Woodbridge area and agreed to meet together on Sabbaths for a branch Sabbath school. The branch Sabbath School began meeting the first Sabbath afternoon in January 1970 in an Episcopal church with approximately 35 adults and children. Pastor Frey from the Manassas church lead the afternoon meetings. When Frey could not be present, Pastor Correla from Fredericksburg or Pastor Dixon from Alexandria would fill in.

On October 31st, 1970 the Woodbridge group officially became a company with a charter membership of 22 members. Shortly after this the church began meeting in the Covenant Presbyterian Church and continued in that location until the move to the Minnieville Church.

On April 12, 1975, the Woodbridge Company was officially organized as a church with 41 members. Ramon Meyer was ordained as the first elder, three others were ordained as deacons, and three deaconesses were consecrated. Potomac Conference President Kenneth Mittleider presided over the organizational meeting. Others present were Alexandria Pastor Wolcott, Potomac Conference Ministerial Secretary Dan Matthews, and Potomac Conference Treasurer Emil Hagele

In 1973 two acres of land were purchased for $25,000 on Davis Ford Road (later to be renamed Minnieville Road). The church began raising money to pay off the debt and to raise funds to build a church. Under the leadership of Pastor John Robbins, the church officially broke ground for a new church building on April 10, 1983. The church was completed and began meeting in the new building on December 1, 1984. The church consisted of 4 classrooms, fellowship hall, sanctuary seating approximately 130, and 50 paved parking spaces. The church paid off the entire debt in less than 4 years and the church was officially dedicated on May 21, 1988.

Over the years the Woodbridge Church experienced growth in membership, attendance and giving. The church actively participated in evangelism by having evangelistic series (Prophecy Seminars, NET Series, etc.) and members giving Bible Studies. The Northern Virginia area has several major military installations and government agencies, so the church experiences a lot of transfer growth in and transfer loss out.

A second church service was added in the late 1990's, with an average attendance of 156. By 2005, average attendance was close to 200. On many Sabbaths there wouldn't be enough room during the second service to accommodate everyone. There also wasn't enough parking space. After all the paved parking spaces and grass areas were occupied, people couldn't come to church because of the parking situation.

Because the church had outgrown the Minnieville facility, and expansion wasn't an option, it was voted at a business meeting to sell the church and purchase property to build a new facility. On February 28, 2007 the Minnieville Church was sold to the Woodbridge Spanish Church for $1,500,000. On the same date, 6.38 acres were purchased on Dumfries Road for $658,000 to build a new church facility.

With the sale of the Minnieville facility, the church began renting Epiphany Lutheran Church in Dale City on February 24, 2007 and continues to meet at this location. Plans to build a new facility are underway. The master plan consists of a facility approximately 60,000 square feet (sanctuary seating over 600, 10 classrooms, a multi-purpose room/gymnasium and administrative area). Phase I will be approximately 19,000 square feet with a meeting/multi-purpose space seating 300, 10 classrooms and administrative space. The hope is to break ground in the October 3rd 2010.
