A Message from Charles A. Tapp, President, Potomac Conference

It is with a heavy heart that I share with you the news that Pastor George Thornton passed away on Sunday, August 28, 2022.

Pastor Thornton accepted a call to the Potomac Conference in October 2021. He was enthusiastically welcomed by members of the Woodbridge SDA Church in Woodbridge, Virginia. Though his time was short there, he loved his church family at ‘The Bridge’ as he affectionately renamed it, and they loved him. From day one, Pastor Thornton’s mission was to help the church acquire a place of ministry and worship that they could call their own. It was a commitment he took very seriously. Feeling that his time was short, George shared with me from his hospital bed the vision he had for turning this goal into reality. The dream may be delayed, but it will not be deterred.

George began his pastoral career in the Allegheny East Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. His professional path was broad; he was a pastor, administrator, and educational leader. In addition to a Doctorate in Ministry, he earned a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership.

Dr. Thornton served as a teacher and assistant Principal before becoming Headmaster at Pine Forge Academy in Pine Forge, Pennsylvania. He was also the Principal of the Dupont Park Adventist School in Washington, DC.

George, however, felt God’s call back into pastoral ministry and returned to the pulpit serving as pastor of the Magazine Street Seventh-day Adventist Church in Louisville, Kentucky, the oldest documented African American church in the SDA denomination.

A visionary pastor, prolific preacher, and progressive educator, Pastor Thornton was an impactful leader in the Potomac, Allegheny East, and South Central conferences.

He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Carolyn (Kandi), and three children, Cortney, George Jr., and Justin.

Please keep the Thornton family, the Woodbridge church family, and George’s colleagues and friends in your hearts and prayers as they cope with his loss.

Please send condolences to the care of Carolyn Thornton at 15501 Cheswicke Lane, Upper Marlboro, MD 20772.

We praise GOD that He sent Pastor Thornton to Woodbridge to finish his work. In a short amount of time he accomplished so much and got this church motivated to go forth with our church building project. The Pastor had plans to take this church to another level. So, now let’s move forward with the GOD ordained direction that he has given us.

Please remember to lift up Carolyn and the family in a special way. Praise GOD for the life of our Pastor, Doctor George E. Thornton, Sr. May GOD grant us the strength, comfort and peace to endure this trying time and to finish the work.
